Greg Downey, Esq

An attorney by training, Greg Downey began his career as a sports agent and marketer, representing professional athletes’ marketing and endorsement endeavors and league contract negotiations. His primary client was Hall of Fame quarterback Jim Kelly.  Greg represented Jim and served as in-house counsel to Jim Kelly Enterprises, a sport marketing agency that develops and manages strategic integrated marketing alliances between consumer goods companies and sports properties and athlete endorsers to promote sales, stage hospitality, and deliver brand messaging. When Jim retired from football, Greg negotiated his broadcast talent contracts for NBC and ESPN.

Greg then went on to hold leadership positions in marketing, business affairs, broadcasting and business development at the United States Olympic Committee. His experiences included managing the relationships with the 39 Olympic sports, the Paralympics, and negotiating hundreds of intellectual property, marketing, and broadcast rights agreements, including being part of the team that negotiated the Olympic Games broadcast agreement with NBC, which was a 10-year $2.2 billion dollar deal and the largest in sports history. Greg created the USOC’s partnership contracts with College Sports Television (now CBS College Sports) and negotiated the agreement between the USOC and Mark Cuban’s HDNet to broadcast Olympic sports year-round. He also launched the USOC’s Entertainment Properties Division, which produced several films with Bud Greenspan, as well as the Disney film Miracle staring Kurt Russell as famed 1980 U.S. Olympic Team hockey coach Herb Brooks.

After the USOC, Greg joined NBC Universal in Hollywood. He worked on shows in all dayparts, across cable and network television, as well as feature films.

Greg was recruited by The Coca-Cola Company to head its Entertainment Marketing Division, a unit that utilizes entertainment platforms such as feature films, television, music and gaming to market Coca-Cola’s brands. He oversaw all areas of entertainment for the world’s largest brand, including American Idol, The Grammys, and The Oscars, and continued to hone his expertise in negotiation, intellectual property law, branded entertainment, marketing and branding. He also oversaw MyCokeFest, Coke’s annual music festival at the NCAA Final Four, negotiating with record labels and securing copyright clearances for all musical acts including Three Doors Down, LL Cool J, Daughtry, Sugarland, Maroon 5, Fergie and Taylor Swift.

Following Coca-Cola, Greg led Brand and Consumer Marketing at NASCAR, negotiating NASCAR’s advertising and other agency relationships in order to create and implement NASCAR’s brand and advertising plans.
